Niagara is one of the first regions in Canada to institute a Charter of Rights for children and teens.  The Niagara Children's Charter of Rights is unique in that the children of Niagara directly contributed to its development.  It is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by 191 countries in 1989.

 

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate human rights, civil and political rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights.

Since the development of our Charter in 2002, it has been endorsed by all twelve municipalities of Niagara and several community organizations, in demonstration of their commitment to the children of our community.

It is our hope that the Charter will be used as a reference point to guide planning and decisions made on behalf of Niagara's children.
