About Early Years Niagara

"One of the striking observations is that regardless of

socioeconomic class, if children are read to, they are

less likely to have poor cognitive development or major

behavioural problems."

Honourable Margaret McCain & Dr. Fraser Mustard

Early Years Study Three Years Later, 2002

How is Niagara promoting early literacy?

Early literacy is a vital component to healthy child development, and children who are read to early often make an easier transition from home to school.

There are currently annual Family Literacy Events held in five municipalities across Niagara, reaching thousands of local families with the message to encourage early reading and to read together.

In addition, the Debbie Zimmerman Early Years Niagara Literary Award has been established to recognize literature for children under six and encourage reading with children from infancy.

This year's Touch a Truck fundraiser had attendance of over 5, 000 families, including 1, 700 children, and raised over $12, 000.00 for children's literacy in Niagara.

This is all made possible through the collaborative efforts of many community organizations, volunteers and sponsors.
