2016 National Child Day Activities
27 October 2016
Niagara Children’s Planning Council, with leadership provided through the Families are Strong, Stable and Connected Pillar and the Niagara Falls Public Library, is thrilled to be bringing a variety of StoryWalk® Installation Kits to municipalities across the Niagara region.
A StoryWalk® is an opportunity for children to experience reading a book while walking through a park, trail or neighborhood. StoryWalks®promote literacy and outdoor physical activity. Additionally, they foster community involvement and parent engagement. Children of all ages may experience a StoryWalk® with family members or caregivers by following an outdoor path of large, laminated pages from an illustrated story. The pages also contain questions and reading cues to encourage discussion, predictions and to strengthen children’s emergent literacy development.
The StoryWalk® Installation Kits feature expertly selected children’s literature available in both English and French, and may be borrowed free of charge from any Public Library within Niagara. They contain the supplies necessary for organizations, community groups and individuals to arrange a StoryWalk® at a local outdoor location. In return, we ask individuals borrowing the kit to provide feedback in order to advise us on the ways in which the kits have been utilized. Additionally, organizations and individuals may advertise their StoryWalk® date and location through the Niagara Falls Public Library website, should the installation be open to the public.
Please help us in sharing news about this very special opportunity to your colleagues and families whom you work with. The StoryWalk® installation kits may be borrowed beginning November 20th by booking through http://nfpl.info/storywalk. The Installations will be officially launched at Warner Ranch (7705 Schisler Road, Niagara Falls) on National Child Day, Sunday, November 20, 2016 from 10am to 2pm. Visitors will be invited to enjoy snacks and activities after the walk.
